Should I ever have to pay a processing fee to apply for a government job or is this just a scam?

Depending on the agency you are applying for, there may be an application processing fee. For instance, the ATF (Department of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms) has a an application fee that must be paid at time of submittal. These fees can be paid by check, money order or credit card as per the atf.gov site. Most jobs do not require any processing fees and only pay agencies that are posted on the USAJOBS.gov website and are through a Federal Government agency.
